The Education Destination : The Education Destination
International students have arrived in record numbers in Adelaide over the past five years. Adelaide has a lower cost of living than any other mainland capital city. Images courtesy of SA Tourism Commission. The University of South Australia, Adelaide University and Flinders University are all public institutions, following a tradition of excellence that has nurtured Nobel laureates, Rhodes Scholars and other highly-accomplished alumni. Many postgraduates gravitate to the universities’ centres of teaching and research excellence which includes music, engineering, biology, business and wine. Flinders University is set in the foothills to the south of the city on a garden campus, with lakes and tall trees. Adelaide University’s central campus is right downtown. The University of South Australia has campuses located both centrally and to the north of the city, in the high tech and manufacturing precinct. All three universities also have smaller regional campuses. There are state-of-the-art computer labs, science laboratories, libraries and other facilities. The universities have a tradition of excellence that has nurtured Nobel laureates, Rhodes Scholars and other highly-accomplished alumni. 70 The universities also have affi liated foundation programs and language schools. These are particularly useful for students who do not fully meet the requirements for their course and may need language training or a foundation year before entering university. Each university has an international offi ce to look after the needs of international students, including housing, language learning and health. These offi ces even organise social events and trips to the art gallery, the zoo or a wildlife park. Graduates of Adelaide’s universities praise the quality of teaching they receive. Lecturers and tutors are not only informed, but also helpful, and many courses combine theoretical learning with practical experience. AUSTRALIAN STATE PROFILES
