Cultural and religious facilities The large institutions provide cultural and religious facilities for people of different backgrounds. This may include offering a range of cuisines in the cafeterias, including halal and kosher foods. For religious needs, some institutions have multi-faith centres and many campuses have Muslim prayer rooms. Cultural and religious support can also be found through the many clubs and societies on campus. If you feel low because of culture shock, homesickness or study pressures, your international counsellor can give you advice. International students do not have to worry about being on their own during tough times or emergencies. Support services at schools Australian primary and secondary schools care for their international students. They make sure their students flourish emotionally, socially and intellectually. Students are usually met on arrival and taken to their homestay family or the school boarding house. Students follow special orientation programs, and as they settle in, they’re encouraged to take any worries to teachers assigned to pastoral care. Often, older students will mentor a new international student. Schools provide support at every level from practical issues about settling in to English language assistance to co-curricular and social activities. Whether you are a younger or older student, you and your family back home can be confi dent that you will receive a warm welcome and strong support in adjusting to life in Australia. ¦ 88 INSTITUTIONS AND COURSES Top: You will make new friends easily through your course and the many social, cultural and sporting activities.
