Applying for your student visa Stephen Bisset gives you an eight-step guide on how to apply for a visa to study in Australia. To begin your study journey, you must fi rst apply for a student visa. All international students who want to stay in Australia longer than three months must have a valid visa. Your student visa, issued by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), will allow you to study in Australia, give you access to Australia’s subsidised student health cover and permit you to work part-time while you study. Student visas are granted to international students studying full-time in a course offered by an institution registered with the Australian Government. A full list of registered courses can be found on the Commonwealth Register of Courses and Institutions for Overseas Students (CRICOS) website at www.cricos.deewr.gov.au Your visa category will depend on which course you study. There are seven subclasses of visas: English language courses (ELICOS); schools; vocational education and training; higher education; masters and doctorate; non-award; and AusAID or Defence-sponsored. If you are only studying English for less than three months, you do not need a student visa. Following is a general guide of visa requirements so you can ensure your student visa application is processed as smoothly and quickly as possible. 1.
