The Education Destination : Australia The Education Destination 2010
12 | australia the education destination “ Through close industry ties and an outcomes-driven approach, private vocational education and training colleges deliver job opportunities for graduates in the broadest range of industries imaginable.” Many students from overseas who study in Australia go on to have successful and rewarding careers in Australia. Other students leave Australia, but take with them a world-class, accredited education that gives them access to better employment prospects around the world. They also take with them valuable links with Australia through both professional and personal relationships. These links develop relationships between industries and cultures, and foster joint economic activity. Australia: An amazing place to live and study Australia is as spacious as it is diverse – its people, its natural wonders and its unique blend of ancient and modern cultures make it an exciting and enriching country in which to live and study. Australia is the only nation to govern an entire continent. It is one of the most culturally diverse countries with a rich, living Indigenous culture. ‘Friendly, welcoming, safe and relaxed’ are some of the words people use to describe Australia and Australians. With great variety in its major cities and regional centres, students can find a location and a course which suits them and enjoy a lifestyle second to none. Many students are struck by how much there is to see and how different our major cities are by way of their climates, populations and even their accents. Students from overseas find a place that can be a real home where they feel comfortable and secure, and learn from their experience – in and out of the classroom! Australia is so popular as a world-class study destination because it is an amazing place with great educational opportunities and great lifestyle choices. Tuition assurance schemes: Peace of mind for students An important benefit to international students who study at Australia’s private training institutions is the security and peace of mind provided by the Overseas Student Tuition Assurance Scheme (OSTAS). ACPET established the OSTAS in 1994 to ensure that overseas students would never be disadvantaged if a private training provider was unable to continue a course. In these circumstances, ACPET works with member colleges to relocate students, with minimal disruption, to a comparable course with another ACPET member or other approved provider. In addition, international students are safeguarded by the Educational Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act. Working with government: Ensuring the best outcomes for students Good regulation and productive relationships with government are essential to providing quality education and delivering the best outcomes for students. ACPET works closely with all levels of government to ensure that education policy and industry regulation keeps students’ best interests at heart. All ACPET members are registered and audited regularly by state and territory regulatory bodies to ensure they meet national standards and that their accredited qualifications meet student and community expectations of high quality. The Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET) is the peak body for Australia’s private international education sector. ACPET represents more than 1100 training organisations with a wide range of courses including higher education, English language and vocational studies.
