The universities each have their own speciality areas in research, teaching and facilities. All have dedicated support for international students with international offices providing a range of services. Some Victorian universities focus on innovative courses and industry partnerships while others are developing research breakthroughs. For example, one university had international breakthroughs in pioneering IVF technology and in developing drugs to combat malaria and influenza. The Victorian universities are: Australian Catholic University; Deakin University; La Trobe University; Monash University; RMIT University; Swinburne University of Technology; University of Ballarat; University of Melbourne; and Victoria University. These universities are part of a global society and interact with other organisations around the world. When you study at a Victorian university, you’ll be gaining insights on an international level. The most common areas of study for international students are management and commerce, information technology, and engineering and related technologies. But you can choose a course in any field from medicine and science to film and creative arts to sport and recreation. Vocational institutes – training for a career Victoria has hundreds of government and private institutes with a variety of courses. A vocational course gives you practical skills to be job ready. The government TAFE institutes provide education and skills training across all industries. There are 18 TAFE institutes with more than 90 campuses throughout Victoria. Training in many professional areas is undertaken at TAFE. Victorian TAFE institutes have also provided training in countries including India, Korea, China, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Kenya, Indonesia, Pakistan, Japan and Mauritius. Private vocational institutes can be divided into those which offer a range of courses and those that focus on specific industries such as hospitality, music, design, photography, alternate therapies, hairdressing and beauty. The teachers in vocational institutes are experienced in the industry and share their work-related knowledge. You’ll learn on the equipment which is used within the industry, gaining work-ready skills.
