The Education Destination : Australia The Education Destination 2010
42 | australia the education destination famous Central Market, and they can always find cheap and ample meals in the nearby Chinatown precinct. Most students quickly learn Adelaide’s public transport system. Tickets for greater Adelaide’s public buses, trains and trams are cheap, with concession prices for international students. Cinemas also offer student concessions, and the campus international student offices organise special deals for club membership and arts events. Your student visa allows part-time work and many students look for some employment for extra pocket money – and also to learn more about the working world. Common student jobs include restaurant serving staff, supermarket checkout operators and shop assistants. Students may also find convenient shift work such as driving a taxi or caring for aged people. Another way to ease the financial burden of tertiary education is to apply for a scholarship. South Australia’s educational institutions have a $3 million fund for scholarships to international students at the tertiary level. While Adelaide’s international students spend many hours in class or working, they also love to explore their city. Even on a busy day, they find time to hang out in ultra-cool Rundle Street or to fuel up with a foaming latte at a crowded café. From the city, it’s easy to take the tram down to the busy seaside resort suburb of Glenelg or catch a bus to one of the other white sand beaches for a splash in the surf. Weekends are for touring a chocolate factory (with samples) or watching a cricket match at the fabled Adelaide Oval. For longer breaks, visit Kangaroo Island, world-famous for its prolific Australian wildlife and extraordinary scenery. International students are enchanted by Adelaide – a sophisticated city with a great lifestyle – which is well on its way to becoming an international centre of education excellence for the Asia Pacific region.
