76 | australia the education destination every year more and more people are flocking to australia to learn, live and play. WITH ONE of the highest standards of living in the world, this country is widely recognised for its cultural diversity and friendly people. The most popular English language proficiency test in the world, IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, opens doors to this favoured education and employment destination. “Having a qualifying IELTS score allows international students and skilled migrants to access education and employment opportunities in Australia,” says IELTS Australia Director John Belleville. “Many professional organisations also require an IELTS score to consider and process registrations.” It’s clear that the attraction of Australia as an education destination continues to grow. In September 2009, a reported 585,186 international students were enrolled in Australian universities, vocational education training institutions, schools and English language courses. And more and more people across the globe are looking abroad for study opportunities. A global test of English for study, work and life The authenticity of the IELTS test – which reflects the use of English for study, work and life – means that candidates can rely on their result. “ Test writers from different English-speaking countries develop IELTS content so it reflects a range of real-life situations,” Mr Belleville says. Integrating the four aspects of English proficiency, IELTS tests include reading, writing, listening and speaking sections. It’s only in IELTS that candidates undertake a personal one-on-one speaking test with an examiner. “ There are a number of reasons why so many government departments, educational institutions and professional organisations recognise the IELTS test. The key reason so many organisations around the world accept IELTS is the reliability of its results. The test’s quality is proven by years of independent research,” explains Mr Belleville.
