The Education Destination : Australia The Education Destination 2011
Jessica Ling From Monash Grad to Software Superstar Monash is Australia’s largest university and has long been a preferred study destination for students from across the globe. China’s Jessica Ling is just one of many successful graduates. After completing her undergraduate IT degree in her home country, she decided her next study move should be a masters qualification at a university overseas – she chose Monash. Within months of graduating, she secured a lucrative job as an engineer at computer giant IBM in Beijing, a job she says she probably would not have got if she hadn’t chosen an internationally respected university. Apart from leading students into outstanding graduate careers, Monash qualifications stand apart because: • Monash is part of the Group of Eight – this coalition of prestigious Australian universities is renowned for the high standard of its members’ research and education. • The scholarship opportunities are second to none – international students may be eligible for scholarships offered by Monash, the Australian Government or other organisations. • The university is world-renowned – this year we moved into the top 200 universities in the world according to the highly-respected (Jiao Tong) Academic Ranking of World Universities. So when it came time to choose a university at which to undertake a bachelor degree, she was looking for an international presence and well established connections with some of the leading universities around the world. She chose Monash. Her Monash Arts degree has taken her from her native Hong Kong, to Melbourne, Australia, and on to the sandy beaches of California, USA. (Subjects she completed at the University of California counted towards her Monash degree.) Now she is returning home to begin her career armed with a world of experience and a global network of friends. “The international experience has helped me to better communicate with people, and when I talk to employers I have more to tell them, more experiences. I think it shows that I have seen more of the world, and I can better understand people because I have communicated with people from all over the globe. I have definitely learned more than I would have had I just stayed in one city,” she said.
