From organising a national robotics competition to designing a sustainable health program overseas, Curtin students are developing practical skills and forming valuable networks with industry professionals worldwide. inexus at curtin Curtin’s state-of-the-art Engineering Pavilion was overrun by robots last December during a celebration of all things scientific — the 2010 Curtin RoboFair. The centrepiece of the fair was the second iNexus Australia National Robotics Competition, featuring an epic Mars manoeuvre. The scenario: a spacecraft has landed on Mars and needs a team of autonomous robots to travel over the Martian terrain to collect rock samples. The challenge: to construct robots that could collect sugar cube ‘samples’ placed randomly on a grid, and bring them back to the ship. The event was organised by volunteer students from Curtin Business School and Curtin’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, in collaboration with students from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. ‘It’s very much an international, inter-faculty, student-driven collaboration,’ explains Tim Keely, one of the supervising staff from the Faculty. Students from around Australia were competing for the chance to participate in the world grand final at Techfest, held in Mumbai in early 2011. Going Global for international health Go Global, a ground-breaking program unique to Curtin University, gives students the chance to use the skills they’ve learnt in their degree to contribute to the health services provided by Curtin’s partner organisations in China, India, South Africa and Ukraine. Students are challenged to design therapy sessions with the limited resources that are available, creating valuable sustainable health services and lifelong, international partnerships. Shannon Golding travelled to Ukraine in the final year of her speech pathology degree in an experience that changed the course of the rest of her life. The experience sparked her interest in the effects of institutional care on a child’s early neural development, and Shannon has returned to Curtin to conduct a study into the speech development of children in foster care. ‘I hope that I can use my PhD to one day work in developing countries and in institutions similar to the ones that I visited with Go Global,’ Shannon says. Shannon is one of around 80 Curtin students who participate in the program every year. Go Global has won a 2010 Australian Learning and Teaching Council Program Award for innovations in curricula. ■ curtin university gives you opportunities to develop practical skills and form valuable career networks worldwide.
