Australia – The Education Destination 101 ausTralIan unIVersITIes There are three types of masters degree programs – coursework, research and professional. Most masters degrees require two years of full-time study after a three-year bachelor degree or one year of full-time study after a bachelor honours degree or four-year bachelor. A research program is at least two-thirds research with a substantial thesis which is externally examined. It normally requires a minimum of one year of full-time study. Doctoral degree programs can be undertaken as a research doctorate, professional doctorate or higher doctorate. They typically require three to four years of full-time study. Students are expected to make a substantial original contribution to knowledge in the subject area. A research doctorate is made up of supervised research and an original thesis. As a postgraduate student, you can access academic and study skills support, and English language assistance. Some universities have specific areas for postgraduate students including a private office or study area, computers and photocopying facilities.
