univeRSiTy of TecHnology, SyDney flexibility in iT major ‘I was looking for an undergraduate course which offered a combination of the theoretical and practical aspects of IT, and flexibility in a choice of major – the Bachelor of Science in IT (BScIT ) at UTS met all the above criteria. ‘I am glad that I chose the BScIT because I could build my course so that I had a specialisation in business information systems but also cover programming and networking. Another important aspect to highlight is the ethical underpinning of IT education at UTS. I found it very valuable, as we have been taught about the impact of our actions on society as IT professionals.’ ■ Student experiences at the university of Technology, Sydney four international students and graduates share their experiences and success of studying information technology and engineering at the university of Technology, Sydney. career success in multimedia ‘I chose to study at UTS because of its reputation and the Master of Interactive Multimedia provided all the aspects I was looking for in a course. I was really attracted to the balance between the theoretical and practical knowledge in the curriculum. ‘My final media project for the course was an advertisement- driven free WiFi hotspot management service. The project won two prestigious awards – the inaugural Telstra User Centred Design Award - Interface Design, for the best student project in 2008, and the AIMIA Best Student Project in 2009. ‘During my final media project, I was introduced to a few industry professionals in the mobile multimedia sector; one of them was so impressed with my credentials that he offered me a job. I was employed by Wapfly Technologies Pty Ltd in the capacity of a Technical Account Manager, where I still work now I have completed my Masters.’ Practical-based learning Ravil is a recipient of the Dr John Nutt International Undergraduate Scholarship which is awarded to high-achieving students enrolled in the UTS Engineering undergraduate course. The scholarship covers 50% of the recipients’ tuition fees for the duration of their course. ‘The best thing about studying engineering at UTS is the practical-based learning. The faculty staff are very capable and, more importantly, well experienced which makes it even easier to absorb new knowledge and learn from their own life experiences. The Bachelor of Engineering also offers flexibility and a wide variety of choices, for example, on top of your major, you can choose a sub-major to focus on another area of interest. ‘I like the campus. It is located right in the heart of the city, easily accessible and has all the basic facilities in or around it. The library is excellent and so are the computer labs and study areas.’ alina van is an international student from the Russian Federation Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Information Technology, Diploma in Information Technology Professional Practice interactive learning from industry professionals Elisabeth is the recipient of an Achievement Scholarship for postgraduate students. ‘As an engineering graduate, I wanted to be involved in the interface of engineering, technology, business and management and that’s why I chose to do the Master of Engineering Management. ‘The teaching here is very different to what I’m used to – it’s very interactive, there are lots of assignments and group work which has been a great and valuable experience. When you’re in a working environment, you always have to work in teams so this is an excellent opportunity for me to learn. At UTS, the courses are practical and the lecturers have industry experience because they’ve been in the workforce. This really reflects what you learn in class.’ Ranjeet elkunchwar is an international graduate from India Master of Interactive Multimedia, Diploma in Information Technology Professional Practice elisabeth klar-Rosen is an international graduate from Germany Master of Engineering Management (MEM) Ravil Jain is an international student from India Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) finD ouT MoRe Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology University of Technology, Sydney web: www.feit.uts.edu.au email: firstname.lastname@example.org Tel: +61 2 9514 2666 106 Australia – The Education Destination UTS CRICOS PROvIdeR COde 00099F UTS555eNG UTS:EnginEEring & informaTion TEchnology PRACTICAL, CAREER-DRIVEN COURSES UTS courses are designed with industry needs in mind.
