>AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION 2012 25 ‘Australian postgraduate programs are popular with international students. One in four of all international students in Australia is studying at the postgraduate level.’ POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS Australian postgraduate programs are popular with international students. One in four of all international students in Australia is studying at the postgraduate level. In addition to the high standards of teaching and learning, postgraduate programs also provide dedicated support. There are three types of masters degree programs: • coursework • research • professional. Most masters degrees require two years of full-time study after a three-year bachelor degree or one year of full-time study after a bachelor honours degree or four-year bachelor. A research program is at least two-thirds research with a substantial thesis which is externally examined. It normally requires a minimum of one year of full-time study. Doctoral degree programs can be undertaken as a research doctorate, professional doctorate or higher doctorate. They typically require three to four years of full-time study. Students are expected to make a substantial original contribution to knowledge in the subject area. A research doctorate is made up of supervised research and an original thesis. As a postgraduate student, you can access academic and study skills support, and English language assistance. Some universities have specific areas for postgraduate students, including a private office or study area, computers and photocopying facilities. Universities also have postgraduate associations that provide academic and social networks and support. An Australian university program can help you move forward in your research and career goals. ● GLOBAL OUTLOOK Australian universities take an international approach to their teaching and research.
