The universities are involved in collaborative research programs with government and industry. For example, the University of Southern Queensland is renowned for its excellence in applied research in partnership with industry, government and the wider community. One of its researchers, Professor Raj Gururajan is improving information and communication technologies for healthcare providers to remote areas. His research in developing the next generation Digital Stethoscope will enable real-time interaction between remote patients and their specialist. Professor Gururajan is collaborating with organisations, universities and hospitals in Australia, India, Malaysia and China to further develop and evaluate the use of this technology in remote areas of Australia and India. The University of Southern Queensland has also been in discussions with NASA to expand its research focus into smart composite technologies for space applications. Its Centre of Excellence in Engineered Fibre Composites is working with NASA on developing a scholar/research exchange scheme, a joint PhD supervision scheme and joint research and development centre scheme in Toowoomba. QUALIFICATIONS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER Engineering and IT qualifications from Australia are the passport to a successful career anywhere in the world. Graduates work across the globe in top companies and government departments, making a difference to the way we live. ● AUSTRALIA’S FIRST 6-STAR GREEN STAR EDUCATION BUILDING The University of Adelaide’s Innova21 building is Australia’s first 6-star Green Star education building. The nine level, state-of-the-art building is home to the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, offering improved student amenities including a café, computer labs, exhibition area, teaching spaces and 24-hour, seven- days-a -week access to major resources and support facilities. Innova21 is a major step towards the university’s vision to become an Ecoversity – a green university that is committed to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting a campus culture that values sustainable practices. The 6-star Green Star Design Education rating is unique under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star – Education v1 Tool, which assesses the environmental attributes of new and refurbished education facilities in Australia. Sustainable architecture attempts to reduce the collective environmental impacts during the production of building components during the construction process, as well as throughout the lifecycle of the building. This design practice emphasises efficiency of heating and cooling systems; alternative energy sources such as solar hot water; appropriate building siting; reused or recycled building materials; on-site power generation; rainwater harvesting for gardening, washing and aquifer recharge; and on-site waste management, such as green roofs that filter and control stormwater runoff. ‘You will not only gain world-class qualifications but also an innovative outlook to advance you in your engineering or IT career.’
