By participating in real world study programs, Curtin students are developing practical skills and forming valuable networks with industry professionals worldwide. Engineered for tomorrow In March 2011, Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, officially opened the A$32.5 million Curtin Engineering Pavilion Complex. The Pavilion, comprising two buildings and an exhibition plaza, inspires a new era of engineering education in Australia. The Pavilion serves simultaneously as an events hall and working area that brings together students, academia and industry. Project rooms, self-learning studios and structured learning rooms around this space provide the functional areas to facilitate a modern educational experience that will produce tomorrow’s engineers for the industry, both locally and abroad. The opening of the Pavilion completes stage one of the Complex, with construction of the postgraduate research hub – stage two – scheduled for completion mid-2012. Based on its innovative environmental design and technologies, the Curtin Engineering Pavilion has also been submitted for a 5 Star Green Star Rating: a national, voluntary environmental rating system that evaluates the environmental design and construction of buildings. Foundation year studio The Engineering Foundation Year (EFY) program at Curtin University provides a cross-disciplinary curriculum that has been designed to provide the skill base required for commencement of discipline- specific engineering studies. The program is a full-time syllabus that integrates students into a further 3- or 4-year course, and allows students to effectively determine the direction they want to take their engineering studies. The EFY studio and project rooms reflect the layout of a modern office, familiarising students to the style of a professional working environment, and providing a platform for the EFY curriculum. Boost your career Curtin Business School (CBS) offers the most comprehensive and practical business courses in Western Australia. In 2011, CBS’s School of Information Systems introduced the Professional Practice initiative: an opportunity for high achieving students to boost their career. The Program enables students to build practical experience during a 16-week industry placement in a leading IT organisation, while also obtaining valuable networks in the industry. Professional Practice is also one of the strengths of the School of Education from Curtin’s Humanities faculty. In order to be exposed to a wide variety of learning environments, each student is placed into a different school for each of their work experience placements throughout their degree.
