The Education Destination : Australia The Education Destination 2012
>AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION 2012 95 Excellent schools across Australia Australia has an excellent school system across the country. Schools are in many different locations from the inner suburbs of capital cities to rolling countryside to classrooms near the coast. Australia has a national curriculum framework to ensure high academic standards across the country. Each State and Territory has a Department of Education, which manages all schools within its jurisdiction. NEW SOUTH WALES NSW has an excellent system of government and independent schools from Kindergarten to Year 12. Schools are generally divided into primary school (Kindergarten to Year 6) and secondary school (Year 7 to Year 12). Students sit a matriculation exam in Year 12 for entry to tertiary education. NSW has more than 3000 primary and secondary schools; of these around 2100 are government-funded and 900 are independently managed. There are many schooling options including single sex, co-education, religious, secular and boarding schools, as well as schools specialising in particular fields such as science or sporting excellence, languages or performance arts. Many of the independent schools have religious affiliations such as Catholic, Jewish, Lutheran, Islamic and Christian, while others are secular. Schools aim for high academic standards, as well as providing excellent opportunities for co-curricular activities such as sport, music and drama. The schools provide pastoral care to ensure students are happy in Australia and achieve their best. Around 7000 international school students are enrolled in schools in NSW. The largest numbers are from China, South Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. Schools are located across NSW in Sydney and regional centres such as Newcastle, Wollongong, Orange, Bathurst, Armidale, Albury, Wagga Wagga, Lismore, Grafton and Coffs Harbour. Above: Australia offers high quality schools across all of its States and Territories.
