100 >AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION 2012 ‘School students can feel at home in the small Tasmanian cities and enjoy the friendliness and support of their school.’ SCHOOLS >AROUND AUSTRALIA NORTHERN TERRITORY The Northern Territory has around 150 government schools, 20 independent schools and 15 Catholic schools. The majority of schools accredited for international students are in the capital city, Darwin. Schooling in the Northern Territory is divided into: primary (transition to Year 6); middle (Year 7 to Year 9); and senior (Year 10 to Year 12). Students receive a quality education to promote and enhance their intellectual, personal and social development. International students can start their study program with an intensive English course. On arrival, your English language proficiency will be assessed and you will be placed in a course level best suited to your needs. On satisfactory completion of Year 12, students are awarded the Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE) and, depending on the level of their results, will be entitled to enter universities throughout Australia. All schools provide pastoral support for their international students. TASMANIA School students can feel at home in the small Tasmanian cities and enjoy the friendliness and support of their school. The State has more than 200 government (public) schools, as well as some of the most prestigious independent schools in Australia. Tasmania has the highest proportion of teachers with postgraduate qualifications in Australia and one of the highest in the world. All schools offer the State matriculation curriculum and two schools also offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. Students attend senior secondary colleges for Years 11 and 12, where they can choose from over 100 subjects and use the technology centres, learning resource centres and sports development centres. A number of public senior secondary colleges have merged into a new government institution called the Tasmanian Academy for Year 11 and 12 students. Tasmanian schools have excellent facilities, co-curricular activities and pastoral care to support international students.● Elsternwick • Glen Waverley • St Kilda Road Visit www.wesleycollege.net or call + 61 3 8102 6888 for more information.
