Following is a general guide to applying for a course and a student visa. 1. APPly For A courSE When you choose an Australian course or institution, you want to make sure that it will suit your goals. There are many organisations that can help you with information on Australian courses. You can research Australian institutions online and for some courses, you can also apply online. courses that are offered to international students must be registered on the commonwealth register of courses and Institutions for Overseas Students. Each institution sets its application standards depending on the academic and language requirements of the individual course. You will need to meet these application standards; they may include previous study, certain subjects (such as sciences for a medical degree), a level of English language proficiency, and work experience for postgraduate and MBA courses. If you do not meet all of the requirements, you may be able to study a foundation program or English language program in Australia before starting the course. If you are successful in your application, you will receive a letter of offer into the course. This is called an Electronic confirmation of Enrolment (ecoE). EnGlISH lAnGuAGE ABIlIty To study in an institution that teaches in the English language, you will need to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency in English. If you come from a non-English speaking background, you may have to sit an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test before lodging your visa application. Generally, for a vocational course, you will need a minimum overall IELTS band score of 5.5 . For a university degree, you will need a minimum overall IELTS band score of 6.0. However, as each course has different requirements, please check with your institution. 3. VISA APPlIcAtIon International students must have a valid student visa to study in Australia. You should check with the Australian Embassy in your country to see if you are eligible to apply for a student visa before obtaining official confirmation of your enrolment and paying tuition fees. Visa application forms in English, Portuguese or Spanish can be downloaded from the department of Immigration and citizenship website (www.immi.gov.au/ students/). If you need help completing your visa application, use this website or contact a registered education or migration agent in your country. Your visa category will depend on which course you study. There are seven subclasses of visas: English language courses (ELIcoS); schools; vocational education and training; higher education; masters and doctorate; non-award; and AusAId or defence-sponsored. If you are only studying English for less than three months, you do not need a student visa. 4. StudEnt HEAltH InSurAncE The Australian Government requires all international students to have overseas Student Health cover (oSHc) before entering the country.
