FInAncIAl StAtEmEnt As part of your visa application, you will need to show that you have the finances to cover your airfares, tuition and general living costs while studying in Australia, representing at least $18,610 each year. If you are including dependents on your application, you must show that you can support their living costs during your stay. Your student visa allows you to work in Australia for up to 20 hours a week during the academic term and full-time during the vacation period. However, you cannot rely on this work to fund your studies. This will help safeguard you in case of an illness or accident. As an international student, you need overseas Student Health cover (oSHc) before you can apply for your visa. the department of Immigration and citizenship requires you to have oSHc for the whole time you are in Australia. oSHc helps cover medical and hospital treatment that you may need while studying in Australia, from a minor illness such as a cough to an overnight stay in hospital. Five organisations offer oSHc to students. Some institutions have agreements with a specific organisation. You may use that organisation or make your own choice. The cost of oSHc ranges from around $110 for three months to $430 for a year. If you are coming to Australia with your dependent spouse or children, you can arrange health insurance for the whole family. The health insurance organisations have friendly staff to assist you. They often have information on their websites in other languages and staff who speak a number of languages. Most of the organisations have a 24-hour helpline you can contact in case of a medical emergency. The minimum period for oSHc is 12 months or the length of your visa, if this is shorter than a year. oSHc does not cover you for dental, optical or physiotherapy services. If you want to be covered for these treatments, you will need to buy additional private health insurance. For Australian citizens, the Medicare system provides health cover. However, it does not apply to international students. Without oSHc, you would have to pay the full cost of any medical expense or hospital stay. This could add up to thousands of dollars. excellent heAlth system Australia has an excellent health system of medical surgeries, specialist clinics, ambulance services, local hospitals, and large teaching and specialist hospitals. There are also thousands of dentists, optometrists, physiotherapists and other health- related practitioners. Some large universities have medical clinics on their campuses. You normally pay for the medical service and are then reimbursed by your OSHC provider. Alternatively you may be able to give your bill straight to your provider. ApplicAtionsAndvisAs 6. cErtIFIEd coPIES oF documEntS The application requires supporting evidence. You will need to arrange for certified copies of documents such as your passport, academic transcripts from previous years, your birth certificate and financial accounts. Some documents may need to be translated into English by a professional translator. 7. lodGE your APPlIcAtIon You must pay a visa application fee when you lodge your visa. Visas can be lodged at Australian Embassies, through an education agent or online through the department of Immigration and citizenship. online applications are not available for all countries.
