>AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION 2012 143 Tasmania International students in Tasmania enjoy friendly, supportive campuses and affordable prices on an island with World Heritage-listed national parks and unique environments. Above: Tasmania is renowned for its amazing landscapes and World Heritage-listed national parks. Image: Tourism Tasmania Tasmania is a heart-shaped island with a dramatic coastline, stunning mountains, incredible beaches and magnificent rainforests. Much of this unique landscape is now World Heritage- listed. Tourists from around the world visit Tasmania for its extraordinary natural environment, wildlife and colonial history. The small size of Tasmania means that students receive personalised, friendly support on campus and they become part of the community. It’s easier to make friends and settle into your ‘Australian home’. Tasmania is proud of being clean and green, and it has one of the first towns in the world to totally ban plastic bags, emphasising its commitment to conservation and the environment. Hobart, Tasmania’s capital, with its fine harbour, is the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney. Launceston, known as the ‘Garden City’, is the third oldest. Both were founded in the early nineteenth century. Tasmania is famous for its fresh fruit and specialty agricultural products: apples, lavender, farmhouse cheeses, wine – even truffles. Other industries range from tourism to aquaculture and every aspect of marine industry and manufacturing. Tasmania is also known as a creative State for its poets and authors, musicians, artists and craftspeople. International students come to Australia’s southern island State for its prestigious ‘sandstone’ university, as well as for its vocational programs, secondary schools and English language colleges. International students never have to feel alone. Institution staff are approachable, encouraging and supportive. ‘Tasmania is a safe and welcoming place to live. International students say they find it easy to make friends.’
